Children's Book and Kid Movie Reviews - Where the Red Fern Grows based on Character Traits and Virtues
Where the Red Fern Grows

Money was scarce during the depression in the Ozark region of Oklahoma. 10-year-old Billy Coleman really wanted a pair of Redbone Coonhound pups. Mama and Papa could not help but Papa did get him some traps. Billy trapped fur animals, sold the hides, sold bait, vegetables, and did anything he could think of to earn the money. It took him two years to save enough money but finally he got the dogs and named them Old Dan and Little Ann. It took another year to train the pups to hunt but with experience, they turned out to be the best coon dogs around. The dogs were the epitome of loyalty because they would not hunt without each other or Billy. Their adventures made good coon hunting tales. They hunted down the old ghost coon that no one thought could be treed but a terrible accident occurred that night and a boy lost his life. Billys adventures helped him develop a new trust in God as he faced the challenges, adventures and tragedies. Billy entered the dogs in a hunting contest and won. His family was overjoyed when he won the $300 jackpot. One night while Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann are out hunting, they crossed paths with a mountain lion. The lion attacked the dogs and Billy stepped in to try to save them. Instead, the dogs have to save him. Old Dan died from his injuries and Little Ann grieved herself to death a few days later. Billy buried them on a hillside. Now that the family had enough money from the sale of Billys coon hides and the prize money from the contest, they decided to move. Billy went to visit his dogs graves and found that a red fern was growing there. Legend says that only angels can plant red fern seeds and that the red ferns will live forever. Billy is able to move away in peace knowing he will never forget them.
